The family tree and our lovely little apples

I checked my Family Tree software tonight and saw that I have 978 individuals listed and of that number 436 are direct decendants of Ransom Ladd. I have hard copy of about another 1200 names to be entered. Yep, I've got some work to do! I know I am missing quite a few names, dates, places etc especially from the younger generation. So, if ya'll don't mind please email to me at sarahwilliamson2005@yahoo.com your immediate family's information. I would also like to have your email, mailing address, phone number, bank account number (not really!) so that I can put together a complete mailing list.

Good job Sarah! When you have time, research a little harder on "Conan". He might be kin to you...but NOT me! I think you flipped the wrong page on that one. Buy hey...everything else sounds good. you can fill them in on just how zactly it came about that Asa was executed. We need to clear his name on that. If he would have denounced his confederacy, he would have lived. See? Even back then the Ladd's were hard headed!!

Orrin...yeew ain't slow, yeew are jest a visual learner! No one ever told you you that? humph! figures....see how people like to keep the middle kid in the dark??--make you think you aren't so quick to get those brain cells powered up. I know it all too well. Woe is me! Monkey in the middle. Don't worry, you and I can draw our own tree when you get here! We WILL figure this out. (and sorry Sarah, but I ain't givin' an apple to Conan the Barbarian.

Hey Sandi,

the thing is we are decended from Conan the Barbarian King. It is through Amy Gaines and the Gaines line. Just so ya know. Oh an it's the Gaines line.

I thought it was Conan O'Brien.....my bad....

Sandi said...

Lol! Cory I might go with O'Brien. But seriusly Sarah, I'm pretty sure Conan the Barbarian is not real. I could be wrong..but I don't think so. Some people might think he existed...but then again some people might think they were spawn of "The Rifle Man"!!!!

Some more tidbits.

Our family history goes back 2500 years that I know of.

We are all direct decendants of Aedd Mawr (Edward the Great) who was a Welsh king and the creator of the Druid religion.

We are all direct decendants of Conan the Barbarian King (no not Arnold!). He was a very impressive king who lived into his 80's which is rare for his time.

Ransom Ladd was orphaned at the age of 10 when his parents died of small pox during the journey westward. They were traveling by flatboat. They were also traveling with the Sadler, Neal, Gaines, and Norman families with who the Ladd's intermarried. Ransom's bible, rifle, and a water pitcher still exist and belong to the Craig Ladd family in Swartz Creek Michigan. He is decendant from Robert Lee Ladd, son of Ransom. Ransom Ladd was Cherokee Indian. the family's flatboat broke apart at the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers at a place called Bird's Eye Point in Missouri. He was found clinging to a branch of a tree by a hunting party of Cherokee's who took him to their village near Dexter, MO. He lived there until he was grown and got his own land near Dexter. Ransom was educated and could read and write. He was also a Methodist minister and founded the church which is now the oldest Methodist church in Missouri. It is called Sadler's Chapel and was built from his house. There are still parts of his home that can be seen inside the church. Incidently, the people there today love to have Ladd's visit their church.

Asa Valentine Ladd was the eldest son of Ransom Ladd and Anna Eve Norman. Asa served in the Cavalry in the Confederate Army under General Sterling Price. He was part of Price's raid into Missouri in the fall of 1864. Asa was captured near Sedalia MO and taken to Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis. As a result of a retaliatory order given by General Rosecrans, Asa and five other enlisted men were excuted on October 29, 1864. He was buried with his Testament on his chest. He is buried at Buried at Jefferson Barracks Cemetary (Soldier Cem) St. Louis, MO on Sheridan Road, off of Telegraph and 255. Asa is in Section 20 #4608 on South Drive near Monument Drive, 7th row from Marker 20, 7th stone in. Asa wrote two letters on the day of his execution, one to Amy and one to Ransom. I have a scanned copy of his hand written letter to his father, Ransom and I have a typed copy of the letter he wrote Amy. The original letter to Amy is supposedly in Kentucky with Marvin Ladd's family. It's never been confirmed. Asa's wife Amy took herself and six children by wagon from Missouri to Arkansas. They ended up in the Hardy area where there were other Ladd relatives. During the trip the other driver of a wagon (Mr. Davis) capsized from the current in the river and they lost all of their belongings. Mr. Davis swam to shore. Amy had all six children in her wagon and they arrived safely. Tressie Dunivan (their grand daughter) told me that after Asa died, Amy was never the same and kind went nuts.

Henry Asbury Ladd was the fourth child of Asa Ladd and Amy Gaines. In 1993 I visited Bertha Powell who happened to be a classmate of Asa Newton Ladd (my grandfather) at Hilltop School. She said he was her first boyfriend. Bertha Powell remembers Henry Asbury Ladd as a tall man over 6ft about 6-2. He had broad shoulders and big hands. She loved to hear his prayers in church. He was a kind man every one in the community looked up to him. She said he was a leader of the community and people would come over to his house if there was something important to talk about to get his opinion. A very wise man. He married Molly Murphy who was the first postmaster in their community. The post office was inside their house. Everyone loved her cooking and Bertha told me that Molly was the best cook she ever ate after.
