Uncle Pete

I'm sure by now, most of you know that Uncle Pete passed away last night. He was just the sweetest man I've ever encountered, and as sad as I am that he is gone...I know that the world is a much better place because he lived.

I loved to check out the motor home, see the bird and hear Aunt Tressie give him a hard time. Plus, every time I saw him, it was like seeing Grampa Jim again. Salute, Uncle Pete, we love ya.

Uncle Pete made a difference in all our lives. He had an endless smile that was contagious. We talked about him for weeks after every visit and yes, he did have a lot of qualities of Grampa Jim. He will be missed but remembered fondly.

Uncle Pete was….without a doubt, the most sincere and loving person ever. He only remembered the good qualities of people, and it was genuine. He would watch EVERYONE….and with such a sweet smile and those deep dimples, you could tell he was watching with love. Uncle Pete pretty much lost his hearing a long time ago. At first he could hear just enough to join in conversations with only minor misunderstandings! But eventually he could not hear anything. Even in his silent world he could laugh and smile at everyone he came in contact with. In some way, he still knew what was going on in a room full of people, and if he didn’t….well, he sure fooled me! He had a way to make you feel like “someone special”, and always bragged on his family. For those of you who were not fortunate enough to have spent some time with him…..do not think he did not think of you. He knew ALL of us, and asked about ALL of us. He was always eager to hear some news about family members. Not only that, I would bet that there was not one member of his family that he did not pray for in some way. He had a true heart and a loving Spirit.
As he was losing his hearing, he learned to lip read very well, and if it’s even possible, he watched everyone around him even more, and the more he watched, the more joy came over his face. He was catching a little piece of all of us and putting it next to his heart. That’s just the way he was.
Evona, (his daughter) took his little wipe off board so we could talk to him thru writing. It was really fun to mess with him sometime because the least little thing “off color” could put a look of shock on his face! Still yet, he wouldn’t say anything bad….just shake his head.
He taught me some very important things in life, and I will never forget him, and yes, every time he came to visit, it was like getting a little piece of Dad back again. I guess you could describe him best by saying “he loved, and he loved BIG”. What a wonderful thing to be remembered for. Although I am so sad that he is gone from us now, I know that the angels danced as they saw he coming…and that is what made it easier to let him go. We will miss him so much, and we will all take comfort in knowing that he DID make a difference in our lives.
