Water and Rocks

Ok, Sandi, you asked for it ... now you wont be able to shut me up!! here are some photos of the water garden that I built at our home ......

I had a terrible time with erosion on one side of our house.... so I found a way to work with it instead of against it.

Orrin, you do some beautiful garden/waterfalls. We need you in the area I live in. Ever think about re-locating to a warmer climate.
Also, welcome and nice to read your blogs.

That would be cool at your house, Aint Aud, and it could fill with golf balls so you wouldn't need fancy rocks!

Very cool, Orrin! What do you do with the fish in the winter?

Sandi said...

Cory....they EAT the fish in the winter...what else???

Seriously, that looks like waaaay too much work for moi, but I like the idea of no grass! Well, honestly I never had real grass unless you count Johnson grass. Anyway, that is a pretty cool arrangement. I can see why it was a family affair! By the way, what the heck is a "koi"? and who had to lift those BIG rocks? Makes my back hurt just thinking about it. (and the fish are pretty cool too!)

Thanks :-)

I just dug some holes and trenches, laid in a rubber liner and then....

The rocks, I collected for 2 years, dragging them home with a tractor (the ones too big to be lifted by the loader bucker) ... then once I got the rocks all home.... I just said abracadabra and wiggled my nose ... snapped my fingers while standing on one leg and crossing my eyes with breath held.... and bingo! they just hopped right into place! it was much easier than mashin fingers and bustin certain body parts ... and yes Cory, I think there were a couple of f-bombs.... maybe 2 of em

You shoulda seen it!

We move the fish to the bottom "pond" for the winter, its the deepest at almost 3 feet.... the earth warms the water from the bottom, so even here ... at 20 below zero, the water will not freeze solid if it is 2 feet deep or deeper .... I have even found fish made it through the winter in one foot of water. I also run a bubbler so that a "breathe" hole stays open to let out any gasses that form from vegetation breaking down (or fish waste). It takes me a day in spring to clean it up and a day to close it up for the winter, otherwise, its a 15 minute a week thing to keep things looking good ... well worth the effort.

Koi are basically colorful carp. It is amazing what people will pay for them.... I know a guy that sold his 28" long breeding female for $24,000 ... yeah I know... musta seen him coming lol .... I think I should be breeding fish instead of construction!

have a wonderful day!

next time I'll put up pictures of Julaine and Alyx (our daughters are 20 & 16) showing their horses!

They do cowgirl-up!!!

love,

Orrin, that's just pretty darn impressive. I can't believe the price the guy got for the "koi"! No wonder I didn't know what it was....my eyes don't wander to things it can't have! LOL!

And for what ever strange reason I BET someone could make something beautiful from golf balls! Heck, people make house from hub caps, why not a golf ball garden! You wouldn't even need a tractor to pull 'em! Then when you have company, you could look at them real serious and say, "would you like to see my husbands' balls?" Yep, that would be a hoot!

Orrin, that is really great! But now every familly over here is looking out there back door going hmmm, what can I do to my yard. A.Aud you have to go with the golf balls. Sandi, you could try the traditional toilet fountain of the south, and Mandi your mother is saying "?!!!"(but you still make me laugh). I want to put the two bathtubs outside like in the commercial for whatever that pill is. Vicki you could throw a couple of soda bottles in your water and Cathi you could fill yours with white wine!Gotta go to Home Depot now and price bathtubs.
See Ya
